BWF Super Series Maybank Malaysia Open 2012

The first BWF Super Series to open an exciting calendar year for badminton with the world’s best players coming to town.

Badminton fans from Malaysia and the region are in for a treat with an impressive all-star line-up for the Maybank Malaysia Open 2012, Presented by Proton having been announced today.

Malaysia will witness the world's best players take to the courts in Stadium Putra, Bukit Jalil from the 10th to 15th January 2012, battling to earn their piece of the US$400,000 prize pool, and the prestige of taking home the Maybank Malaysia Open title for 2012.

The entries for the tournament closed on the 6th December 2011, and BAM has received confirmation from the top ranked men and women in the world.

The world's top ten men will be present, with Lee Chong Wei, Lin Dan, Chen Long, Chen Jin and Taufik Hidayat all ready for competition,

In the women's event, all ten of the world's top ten have also entered, including newly crowned world number one, Wang Yihan, and the recently deposed world number two, Wang Shixian.

Encik Mohamed Adam Wee, Chief Marketing Officer of Maybank said 'Badminton has always had a strong following in Malaysia, and for Maybank to be able to work with the Badminton Association of Malaysia to showcase the best of the best at Stadium Putra gives us great pleasure.'

Dato' Lee Chong Wei, Malaysian and World No. 1 will be looking to capture an astonishing fifth title in a row at the Maybank Malaysia Open, which would also be his eighth overall, equalling a record that has stood for over 50 years. As the obvious local champion, Lee will undoubtedly garner the most support and will be favourite to retain the title once again.

In addition, his nemesis, China's Lin Dan, will be looking to break Lee's stranglehold on the opening event of the badminton season. As a four-time world champion and the reigning Olympic champion Lin Dan is considered by some to arguably be the greatest badminton player of all time.

In the men's doubles, Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong, the local Malaysian champions will be looking to win back their title after missing out last year, whilst the reigning champions, Chai Biao and Guo Zhendong will looking to build on last year's win.
